STUD HISTORY 


The picturesque hills of Barrabool Park - now home to Silkwood Stud

 

Silkwood Stud in fact began under the name of Waverley Stud in 1977 when Janne Wilson purchased her first foundation mare, Spring Song Of Waverley. Shown with great success, 'Tamie' was then put in foal to the legendary stallion, Keston Royal Occasion (IMP). The result, a filly named Waverley Festivity, foaled in 1983 and went on to an illustrious career claiming Champion Ridden Riding Pony titles at Adelaide, Melbourne & Sydney Royals. The year 1992 saw Waverley Festivity achieve the height of success claiming the National Pony of The Year title.

The Waverley prefix was changed to Silkwood before Spring Song Of Waverly foaled her second filly to Keston Royal Occasion (IMP) - Silkwood Jeni-wren. The resultant foal of a cross to Weston Mascot (IMP) also produced a great mare in Silkwood Acushla. From here two more foals were produced before Tamie was sold to Peter & Robyn Barry of the well respected Mirinda Stud. Foals by Keston Royal Occasion (IMP) proved formidable, as all of the Spring Song of Waverley offspring became either National, Grand National or Royal Show Champions.    

It was in 1982 that Janne Wilson then purchased Rotherwood Windswept (IMP) from the legendary breeder Liz Mansfield (UK) with the intention to build an impressive breeding program. With much sought after bloodlines he was sired by Solway North Wind (UK) from Rotherwood Peep Show (UK), making him a full brother to Rotherwood Acrobat (IMP), as well as half brother to Rotherwood Footlight (IMP). This mix of Riding Pony blood has been influential on the breeding programs of many riding pony studs in Australia.

In 1983 another monumental decision was made for the stud when Solway Springtime (IMP) sired by Wingrove Minkino (UK) was purchased after arriving at foot with her mother, Solway Magnolia (IMP). When crossed with Janne's imported stallion Rotherwood Windswept (IMP), Springtime produced sires of the future; Silkwood Babbling Brook and Silkwood Chalkstream, along with a filly, Silkwood Spring Thyme who was later sold to Sandra Donovan where she bred beautiful ponies under the Astral Prefix. When crossed with Carolinas Cat's Whiskers (IMP), Solway  Springtime (IMP) also produced another sensational colt in Silkwood Puss 'n' Boots.

For many years Silkwood Stud was located in South Australia. With foals born every two years the emphasis was on quality as opposed to quantity. During this time the stud bred many Royal Show Champions and Horse Of The Year (HOTY) winners. After a friendship was formed between Janne Wilson and Carole Lindeman the Silkwood Stud later relocated to the picturesque hills of  Barrabool Park on the outskirts of Geelong in Victoria, where it currently resides.

In partnership, Silkwood Stud continues to produce exceptional led and ridden ponies and galloways.

Silkwood Stud bred Royal Show, Horse of The Year and National Champions of recent times include: Silkwood Renaissance, Silkwood Slip Stream, Silkwood Heaven Can Wait, Silkwood September Rain, Silkwood Fanfare, Silkwood Nutkin, Silkwood Ocean So Fair, Silkwood Angel Wings and Silkwood Heaven's Chalice. 

 

 

Most recently the opportunity arose to purchase Jacket's Bluebird (IMP) from Liz Irwin of Rothwell Stud to further expand the breeding program. Having used Peeko in the past with great success, Silkwood Stud is delighted in having this wonderful sire on a permanent basis.

Silkwood ponies and galloways have become familiar to the winners circle so we encourage you to keep updated with the stud's progression. As Silkwood Stud continues to grow, quality youngstock are continually for sale.
